ABC's of Air Purification

There are two parts to effective and meaningful air filtration:  Particle capture and Air flow.  The combination of good air flow and particle capture will reduce the majority of allergens from your home and lead to a better living environment.

When looking for air purifiers try and find one that has the highest tested airflow.  The important part is the testing.  There is no regulatory oversight regarding air purifiers and air flow ratings and it is common for companies to overstate their airflow.  This would be the equivalent of a car company overstating their vehicle’s horsepower.  You are overpaying for a machine that will not perform and with an air purifier it is directly related to your health.  Additionally, those “silent” air purifiers move so little air they have an effective working radius of only a few feet around the product.  To efficiently clean the air in your home you would have to purchase dozens of these units.

In regards to particle capture you will want to look for an air purifier that captures the smallest particles possible while using a medium that maintains its efficiency over time.  Air purifiers that do not use true HEPA material typically will suffer in their ability to capture particles over the life of that filter.  Most air purifiers will claim that they meet HEPA standards by capturing particles down to 0.3 microns.  These machines are effective at capturing allergens if they can maintain their performance levels.  However almost 90%of all the particles in your home’s air is less than 0.29 microns.  This includes viruses, bacteria and some smoke particles.

One reason why we recommend IQAir is that they test the airflow of every machine to make sure it meets their standards.  To date we have yet to find a company that does that and exceeds IQAir’s top CFM rating for their units.  Additionally with 28 square feet of capture material in the pre-filter alone and a true HEPA filter IQAir’s machines maintain a consistent capture rate over the life time of their filters.  The most important reason to purchase an IQAir is that every unit is designed to capture particles down to 0.003 microns.  This is the level of reliable unwavering protection you need to insure the air quality of your home will be improved to have a meaningful impact on your life.
